The Brussels town hall is a Gothic structure located on the Grand Place. It was constructed between 1402 and 1420 to a design of Jacob van Thienen. The building was expanded twice starting in 1444.

The facade is decorated with reproductions of the original statues of nobles, saints, and allegorical figures. The originals are preserved in the city museum.

The town hall was in ruins following the 1695 invasion by the French. The interior was rebuilt and the two rear wings were added by Corneille Van Nerven in 1712. The Gothic interior was restored by Victor Jamar in 1868. The tapestries, paintings, and sculptures, inside the town hall are new.

The 96 meters high Brabantine Gothic style tower was designed by Jan van Ruysbroek, the court architect of Philip the Good. it was completed in 1455. On top of the the spire is a 5 meter tall statue of Archangel Michael, the patron saint of Brussels, slaying a devil represented as a dragon.
