Sacred Heart Catholic Church was originally formed to serve the increasing
German population setting in the Florissant area. The other Catholic Church, St.
Ferdinand was French based. Many of the early German settlers spoke neither
English or French. The Sacred Heart parish dates to 1867 and the present church
building was built in 1893. The church is in a Gothic Revival style with it
dominating spire. Next to the church is Herz Jesu Schule c. 1889 a German based
Catholic school. The school is built in a Missouri German architectural style.
The houses in the district reflect French and German styles.
