The canal has a length of 55,6 km, it has 10 locks and connects the cities of Roanne (department 42) and Digoin (department 71). It is one of the three canals who were part of the “Plan Becquey” of 1821/1822, named after the French minister Louis Becquey.
Construction work began in 1832, and the canal was opened in 1838, together with the “Canal latéral à la Loire”.
