The placard with the piece reads:

"Emma Stebbins

Machinist and Machinist's Apprentice
c.1859
Marble
Gift of Antiquarian Society, 2001.13.1-2

Emma Stebbins was a leader of the community of women
sculptors in Rome. Like their male colleagues, these women
emulated the statues of classical antiquity. Stebbins'
subjects here can be identified by their clothing: cap,
work shirt, leather apron, and long pants. The machinist
holds a forging hammer and toothed gear, the means and
the ends of his labor; the young apprentice demonstrates his
ability to improve on his teacher's experience with his
compass and drawing stylus. By using a neoclassical idiom
to represent a new machine-based profession practiced
by two generations of workers, Stebbins celebrated the
possibilities of innovation."

The Museum cost $18 for adults and has the following hours:
Monday–Wednesday, 10:30–5:00
Thursday, 10:30–8:00
Friday–Sunday, 10:30–5:00
Sector of the workforce: Machinist and Machinist Apprentice

Created or Donated by which group: Gift of Antiquarian Society
