Rocky Taconite greets visitors to Silver Bay, MN. As he does he pays tribute to the history of Silver Bay and the major role that taconite played in the area. In fact, Silver Bay was built because of taconite. Once considered a throw away in the iron ore mining industry, taconite is a low grade of iron ore. Once Dr. E.W. Davis of the University of MN developed a way for taconite to be extracted and profitably, the city of Silver Bay came to be.
Visitors can pose for photos with Rocky and he has become quite the celebrity in the area.
