This bridge was built in 1977 - 1979. Before, there was only the medieval wooden bridge about 500 meters north, this has been closed for motorized traffic since.

Because the bridge just branches off the main street at a steep slope in the middle of inhabited area there was no room for a customs building on the Swiss side. The officials decided to build the customs offices of both countries in a shared building on German soil; this was quite uncommon these days.
