In Boston's Financial District, west of the Old State House, is a building with massive columns over the front entrance to the building. This building currently houses Boston city offices such as the Boston Public Schools. The location where this building stands was once the location of a prison and a courthouse.
The building is about ten stories high. Four massive columns on the front extend six of these stories. There are several steps that lead to the the front entrance. There is a plaque with the seal of Boston on the left side of the entrance.
The cornerstone is located on the north west corner of the building, on the right side facing the front of the building on Court Street. It is at street level, about 2 feet from the ground. The cornerstone states that this building was built in 1912, but I could not determine what the building was originally built for. There are images of the building before this one that were built in 1838, which show that the previous building was very similar in appearance to the present design. Therefore, I am guessing that this building was also a courthouse, first.
On the left corner of the building, there is a sign concerning the Old Prison that on this location in the 1700s. One of the prisoners was Captain Kidd, who was arrested for piracy and murder, and held here until he was sent to England for trial and execution. See the waymark link, below.
