From the West Milford Messenger:

On May 10, a dogwood tree was planted in West Milford Veterans Park in honor of the military working dogs, thanks to Yevchak’s perseverance and dedication.

“Service dogs have played such an active role in our everyday life but none as hazardous and stressful as the military working dog,” said Yevchak. “Their ability to not only protect their handlers and alert them to countless threats is only intensified by their ability to share a mutual bond of love and loyalty. Each will risk all to protect the other and in to many cases it has sadly come to pass.”

Yevchak’s mission to have the dogs honored by including them at Veterans Park started in 2010 after the township designated March 13 as K9 Veterans Day in West Milford. Ultimately, the day was acknowledged throughout New Jersey when Governor Chris Christie signed into law a bill officially recognizing March 13 as K9 Veterans Day in the state. It’s something Yevchak has been working toward since he started his mission in 2009.

“I am extremely proud but humbled to be able to show our sincerest thanks to our military working dogs and therefore their handlers and military as well by this monument to the MWDs,” said Yevchak. He said he was grateful that West Milford was now joining so many other towns throughout the United States that have acknowledged the value of the military working dogs since their official beginning on March 13, 1942.

A plaque will be added to the site of the tree with the following inscription: “Dedicated to the Military Working Dogs of America Loyal - Loving - Courageous A Soldiers Lifeline! 2011.”

Where angels fear to fly, K9 leads the way.”
