Art|Basel was founded in 1970 and only three years later it had grown the worlds largest art fair. The Daily Telegraph called it "the Olympics of the art world".
It is held every year in June in the convention center of Basel. Only 300 of the leading galleries of the world can participate, thousands are on the waiting list for many years. It is a very important event for gallery owners, art collectors and curators from all over the world, but you can also see large numbers of billionaires and Hollywood celebrities followed by the usually media crowd.
Over the years several concurring, but usually more alternative art fairs have grown around Art|Basel. They all are at the same dates all over the city, but they are completely independent.
In 2002 Art|Basel founded a sister fair in the USA: the Art|Basel Miami Beach, held each December.
