The derivation of the name of this pub totally escaped me until I spoke to the landlady.

Willa is an old name.

Willa, or Guilla of Provence (or Burgundy), was the consort of Rudolf I of Upper Burgundy. So little is known of her that all that can be said is that she died before 924.

Willa of Tuscany was the consort of Berengar II of Italy. She probably ended her life living in a German nunnery.

But spoons?

None of the above has anything to do with the name. There is a lovely story.

This pub had stood empty for a while before the current landlord and landlady bought it. There was a rumour going round the town that the pub had been bought and that the pub chain Weatherspoons were going to open a place in town. The couple decided that they would raise a smile, and the landlord being known to his friends as 'Willa', Willa Spoons then, was an obvious choice.
