From the Festival website:
Celebrating Mackinac's lilac collection began in 1949 after a conversation with Evangilene “Ling” Horn and Nurse Stella King who encouraged the then teen and today's Mackinac Island Carriage Tours veterinarian Dr. Bill Chambers to have a parade on Lilac Sunday.
The idea was to bring people to the Island to enjoy a great horse drawn parade amidst the lovely lilacs that fragrance the Island in June. What began as a one day event called the Mackinac Island Lilac Day has blossomed into a ten day festival.
Current and Future Dates:
June 10-19, 2011
June 8-17, 2012
June 7-16, 2013
The island explodes with beautiful lilacs at this time of year so it is the perfect time to bring people here with a festival. There are many different activities every day of the festival such as, walking history tours, concerts, growing lilacs classes, etc. Most activities have a cost associated with them. But the parade that tops the festival on the last Sunday is free and a lot of fun.
Keep in mind that Mackinac Island does not allow automobiles. You will get here by ferry and then use your feet, ride a bike or take a horse-drawn carriage.
