Venice's most famous and visited attraction. This church is one of the best known examples of Byzantine architecture in the world. Its located at the eastern end of the Piazza San Marco, adjacent and connected to the Doge's Palace. The church dates back to 832 when it was originally the chapel of the Doge. The present basilica was consecrated in 1094. Its opulent design and gilded Byzantine mosaics are symbolic of Venice's wealth and power dating back to the from the 11th century.
The stamp is based on a painting by Emilo Vangelli and was issued by Vatican City to promote the UNESCO campaign to save Venice.
