The Prince of Songkhla (Somdet Phra Mahitalathibet Adunyadetwikrom Phra Borommaratchachanok) is the father of the King of Thailand (Rama IX). The Prince (1892-1929) was a son of King Rama V. He is best known for his efforts in improving the standard of medical practice in the Kingdom of Thailand in the early 20th century. He personally worked at a hospital in the northern Thai town of Chang Mai and sponsored the training of Thai medical students in the USA. Due to his work in basic science and medical education this university was named in his honour.

This statue of the Prince stands outside the administration building of the Pattani province campus of the Prince of Songkhla University, in southern Thailand. The Prince is depicted in academic garb, holding a book or folio in his right hand. I venture to say, rather a well crafted statue.

ADVISORY: For the last few years and decades there has been an ongoing insurgency in the Muslim populated provinces of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat (the 'deep south' of Thailand). An average of 600 people (out of a pop. of 1.6 million) have been killed per year between 2004-9. The Australian government strongly urges its citizens not to visit these provinces: "do not travel". Having said all of this there is no blood on the streets, and life goes on normally for the vast majority of people. You have been advised.
