Elsinore was settled by a group of predominently Danish Mormon converts in 1874. It was named after a Danish castle immortalized with the fictional name of Elsinore in Shakespeare's play Hamlet.

One of the most amazing stories about this town was the 10-year-old boy who persuaded the town to start a library with him as the librarian. In two years under his leadership as the youngest municipal librarian anywhere in the United States, the library had grown to over 10,000 volumes (most donated) and after three more years had grown to over 17,000 volumes.
