On Nuakata, they used to bury people in the ground with only the head sticking out. They then put a clay pot on top and waited for the body to decay. Once the procedure was over, the skull was taken to the skull cave as a final resting place.
For about two generations on Nuakata, Christian burials are practiced now but the cave can still be visited if you obtain permission from the traditional land owners.
