From Saltaire to Leeds this cycle route mainly uses the Leeds Liverpool canal towpath to provide a traffic free cycle route. However as you head east towards Leeds at this point the towpath becomes very narrow and the route moves onto Dockfield Road here.
The road at this point runs right alongside the canal and is a quiet road. The route returns to the canal after about a mile at a railway bridge.
In the UK an organisation called SUSTRANS promotes sustainable transport especially by the use of cycles. They have helped to design a national network of national cycle routes, and work with local councils to provide cycle lanes and signs.
Route 66 is a national long distance cycle route, running between Kingston-upon-Hull and Manchester. Not all of the route is open yet, but this stretch uses the canal from Leeds to Saltaire, a distance of about 14 miles.
Ths web page can be used to check which parts of the routes are open in this area. (
