There is a difference of about 1000 feet between the elevation posted, which is for the urban center along the Colorado River, and the GPS elevation at the town limit sign that is waymarked here. Laughlin, like many other towns, has annexed large swathes of land on its outskirts in order to provide for orderly, controlled growth or to make sure that any future development benefits the tax base of the town. The western limits of Laughlin are quite a distance from the urban core and rest high up the flanks of the valley carved by the Colorado River. This radical change in elevation is visible in an accompanying photo.
