There have been a number of name changes in this area over the years. Bullhead City was originally named Hardyville but when it became a company town for the construction of the Bullhead Dam, named after a prominent rock formation that served as a landmark for steamship pilots on the Colorado River, it was nicknamed Bullhead City. But then they changed the name of the dam to Davis Dam and Lake Mohave rose to cover Bull's Head Rock, the formation that gave the dam its original name.

In 1984 the unincorporated communities of Riviera, Holiday Shores, and Bullhead City incorporated as Bullhead City, firmly establishing that name for the future.
