Elmer Gillespie, a long time resident, envisioned this cemetery and is its first resident. The land was donated by the National Park Service in 1955. The cemetery is to remain in its natural state. The cemetery is for use of people who live in the Cave Creek School District only. In 1984, the City of Carefree incorporated and this cemetery became part of its city limits. It is difficult to estimate how many are here, but it looks like it is fairly small with only 500 graves or so at this time.
