Foi desenhada pelo arquitecto Carlos Amarante, por encomenda do Arcebispo D. Gaspar de Bragança, para substituir uma primitiva igreja, mandada construir por D. Rodrigo de Moura Teles que se encontrava em ruínas.
As obras começaram em 1 de Junho de 1784, tendo ficado concluídas em 1811.
A fachada é ladeada por duas torres e termina num frontão triangular. Aos lados da porta principal, em nichos, entre as colunas de seis metros de altura, as estátuas dos profetas Jeremias e Isaías, com inscrições em latim. A meio, por cima do grande janelão e escudo de D. João VI, que em 1822 concedeu ao santuário as mesmas honras e prerrogativas da misericórdias.

It was designed by architect Carlos Amarante commissioned by the Archbishop Gaspar de Bragança, to replace an earlier church, built by King Rodrigo de Moura Teles which was in ruins.
Work began on June 1, 1784 and were concluded in 1811.
The facade is flanked by two towers and finished with a pediment. On either side of the main door, in niches between the columns of six feet tall, the statues of the prophets Jeremiah and Isaiah, with inscriptions in Latin. The middle, above the large picture window and shield D. John, who in 1822 gave the sanctuary the same honors and privileges of The Mercies.
