Gates is little more than a couple of dozen homes, a few stores. a restaurant and gas station. Most people barely notice when they pass through. But it is in a scenic valley, next to the Santiam River, and along a main highway into the Cascade Mountains.
And this natural setting is the theme of the sign. It is formed by overlapping sheets of metal and acrylic, some with a patina finish, to represent the sky, mountains, trees and river, and to give a 3-D effect. A gray-white sheet is used to represent snow capped 10,500 foot Mt. Jefferson, and darker sheets are used to convey the rugged nearby peaks. At the bottom, different shades of acrylic blue give the impression of a wild river, and evergreen trees are placed in from of all the other layers. The sign is framed near ground level by a low wall of rough bricks and cement.
