This bright colorful mural is found on the walls of a small parking lot on the side of Orchard Place. Orchard Place, a juvenile center for children with mental and behavioral disorders, worked in cooperation with the Des Moines Art Center’s Artist-In-Residence program to beautify these drab brick walls. The puzzle motif is symbolic of transformation, inspiration and renewal to put the pieces back together for a stronger sense of place for these children.
Artist Barri Lester from the Des Moines Art Center was joined by Anne Welles, the art instructor at the Orchard Place School; some of the children contributed their ideas. The mural spans two walls, one 66’ wide and 24’ high, the other 112’ wide and 34’ high. It was completed in 2003.
