In 1872 Jonathon Dunham and JL Wood rode the stage coach from Worthington Minnesota to South Dakota. They selected a small valley for their homesteads and started breaking the land. ML Wood was so impressed with the beauty of the valley and the many springs that he chose Valley Springs for the name of his new home. The two homesteaders applied for a post office and were granted one in 1878.
