There has been a light exhibited at North Foreland since 1499, as a "landfall" beacon, marking the Thames Estuary and as a warning of the proximity of the Goodwin Sands. Although a succession of towers and lights were used, more organised burning was not carried out until 1691 when the foundations of the current tower were built.

The present lighthouse was built in 1732, altered in 1793 when two storeys were added to the tower, and altered again in 1860 when a new lantern was installed. In the same year the two cottages were built for two keepers and their families.

Trinity House took over the lighthouse in 1832 and 1998 it became the last lighthouse in the country to become fully automated with the last lighthouse keeper leaving in October of that year.
