John Dane Player became the first pastor of the Strict Baptist Church formed in January, 1820 in Saffron Walden. The chapel was built in London Road in 1822, at a cost of £400, and extended in 1850 to seat 250. A Sunday School was started in 1859. The chapel was closed in 1948 and was purchased by the Christian Scientists in 1949. It was sold again in 1974 and converted into a private house.
