The god of wisdom, and getting out of tricky situations, is a god to respect! This is Ganesh, the easily recognisable elephant headed god of the Hindu pantheon of deities. While based in India, he is a popular deity in south east Asia, and certainly in Thailand, both as a distinct Hindu god, and as an associate of the Buddha. His image to be found frequently throughout the Kingdom.

This image of Ganesh is located in a prominent position in the former Sanam Chandra Palace in the province of Nakhon Pathom, ~40kms west of Bangkok. The palace was a creation of the Thai King Rama VI (1910-25). It is now a public park and tourist spot, with a number of interesting sights. Worth a visit in itself, if you are in the area.

The Ganesh image was a specific creation of the King. It resides in a traditional spirit house, and in a direct line from the palace prayer room to the Phra Pathom Chedi (the largest Chedi in Thailand), ~1.5kms to the east. The king evidently sought guidance from Ganesh. The statue is still revered by visitors to the palace grounds.
