The red lion was part of the coat of arms of King James VI. Legend has it that when he then also became James I of England he decreed that the red lion should be displayed all over the kingdom.
Many pubs complied and many still display his coat of arms to this day. He was either a very scary person or a well loved one for his command to still be obeyed since his death in 1625.
