The Chaiya National Museum is located in the grounds of the Wat (Buddhist temple) Phra Borommathat, which is just outside the small town of Chaiya, which is ~40kms or so north of the provincial capital of the province of Surat Thani, Surat Thani. It is situated here, and not in the capital, as Chaiya, a millenium ago, was an important part of the long forgotten Srivijaya Empire. The region abounds with archaeological sites.

The museum itself is in a smallish building, but it does have a good range of artefacts from the Srivijaya and other periods, and I believe, a number of important artefacts from the Srivijaya time. The artefacts and exhibits are, I suspect, well described, as there are a goodly number of signs and posters, however, as they are all in Thai, I can only suspect. Not many westerners find their way to this quiet town and small museum.

Regrettably, the museum now shares the belief that visitors should not take photographs. There is a small gift shop at the entrance. The locals, given half a chance, will be happy to chat to you, and practice their English. Entry is 100 baht ($3) for a farang, 20b for a Thai.
