Colfax is a city in Placer County. The population was 1,496 at the 2000 census. The city is located along Hway 80 and is named after Vice President Schuyler Colfax. Before it was called Colfax, it was known as Illinoistown.
The city hall is located on Main St in downtown Colfax. The tan painted simple building is located across the street from the train tracks. The building was built in 1927.
