The Great Blue Heron is a prominent figure in the local lore of Barrhead. The elegant, long-legged bird, often spotted along the shores of local lakes, is the Town's official mascot. A statue of the bird is situated at the corner of 50 Street and 49 Street, next to the Community Gazebo that marks the Town centre and miniatures of the bird adorn the street posts.

The Blue Heron also known as "Aaron the Blue Heron" was built in 1984 by Trygve Seland. It is constructed of rebar, wire mesh and concrete and is 8 feet (2.4 metres) in height and is situated on a pedestal that is 4 feet (1.2 metres) in height.
