Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum dates back to 1881 with the founding of the St. Louis School and Museum of Fine Arts at Washington University. The current museum building opened in October 2006 in a Modern designed building by Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki, a former professor at the university. The museum houses one of the nation's finest university held art collections.
