The Bull is one of the oldest pub names in the UK.

It is known that "the Bull" may refer to The Papal Bull, the seal used to authenticate documents authorised by the head of the Roman Catholic church. After Henry VIII declared him to be the head of the church and established The Church of England, he incorporated a bull into his coat of arms. Therefore, "The Bull" could also be a declaration of loyalty to either side of that particular spat.

The history of the last (pun intended) part of the name, goes back to the days of coaching. It is said that coach drivers would announce this as 'The Bull and last stop before central London. This stuck and was shortened to 'The Bull and Last'.
