Life-sized statue of William Henry Seward walking. He is holding a cane and a top hat in one hand and two books in the other. He is wearing traditional clothing of his era. Below the statue is a plaque inscribed:
William Henry Seward (1801-1872)
A dedicated abolitionist and an avowed expansionist, Seward served as Secretary of State during the Civil War, playing a critical role in keeping Europe neutral. After the war, in 1867, he negotiated the purchase of Alaska from Russia. Although some criticized the purchase, Seward, a native of New York state, clearly recognized Alaska's value both for its resources and for its vital role in the Pacific, where he saw America's future developing. In 1869, he visited Alaska and predicted that the "great land" would one day become a state. Seward's Day, the last Monday in March, is now a state holiday, commemorating the signing of the Cession Treaty on March 30, 1867.
