The church is a characteristic of Montelavar religious building of the term of Lisbon and one of many examples that prove the dynamism of the vast rural region around the capital during the first decades of the sixteenth century.

Originally, the church of Montelavar would be dedicated to Santa Maria, not knowing for sure what the date of its foundation, although it existed in 1348.
Dating from the first quarter of the sixteenth century the works of the present Church of Montelavar in the year 1538, also verified that by then with the creation of the parish and the parish of Montelavar, has changed the name to "Our Lady of Purification. "
