The town of Mt. Olive was platted in 12/15/1899 along the Gulf and Ship Island Rail Road. The town was incorporated in 1900. As a center of timber and agricultural trade the city grew quickly; at its peak the town boasted 3 cotton mills producing 25,000 bales a year on average. As of the 2000 census the town's population was 893. It is notable as the hometown of Steve McNair.
