The Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse was built in 1977. It was built to replace the older building in downtown Fairbanks which the courts and federal offices had out grown. The great growth of Fairbanks with the growth of the oil industry in the 1970s necessitated the increased space for federal courts and offices.
