Garland, formerly Sunset, gained prominence when the first successful canal brought water to irrigate the lush soil deposited at the bottom of ancient Lake Bonneville. When the Utah Sugar Company established a factory in Garland in the early 1900's, they encouraged the production of sugar beets by extending credit to farmers to allow them to purchase land owned by the company.
The town was named after William Garland probably because he put over 7,000 men to work on the construction of the canal
