The older the pub, the more likely it is that a pub called The Cock has a real link to the past.

It is probable, where you find a pub called The Cock, that cock fighting went on in the yard or even inside if there was a cock pit. Since cock fighting was made illegal in England and Wales in 1835 (1895 in Scotland), this would be a good indication of whether this might be a proper traditional sign, or just an adopted one.

(If the name was to be 'The Cock and Bottle however, there would probably be no cock fighting link, just drink available in bottles and from the barrel!)
