Heute eine beliebte Stätte der Ruhe und Besinnung, dürfte die Waldlichtung des Tummelplatz südwestlich oberhalb des Schlosses Ambras als eine Art Reitplatz für die Pferde der landesfürstlichen Schlossherrschaft fungiert und daher ihren Namen haben. Als das Schloss nach der Auflassung der Habsburger-Residenz in Innsbruck zeitweise leer stand und namentlich in den Kriegsjahren 1796 – 1814 sowie 1848, 1859 und 1866 als Militär-Lazarett verwendet wurde, hat man den Tummelplatz dann für die im Schloss verstorbenen Soldaten zu einem Militär-Friedhof umgestaltet. In der Folge entstanden dort einige größere und kleinere Kapellen und Bildstöcke, die zum Teil auch künstlerisch geziert wurden. In der Zeit der beiden Weltkriege entwickelte sich dann der Brauch, für die fern von Tirol gefallenen Landessöhne hier Gedenkkreuze zu errichten. Auf diese Weise wurde der Tummelplatz zu einem Ort stillen Gedenkens, eingebettet in die Ruhe des Waldes. – Nach der Auflassung des Tummelplatzes als Friedhof wurde während des 1.Weltkrieges (1914-1918) ein neuer Kriegerfriedhof an der Wiesengasse (Endstation der Tramway Linie 3) angelegt, dem um 1918/20 ein italienischer Soldatenfriedhof und nach 1945 ein Grabfeld für hier als Kriegsgefangene verstorbene Angehörige der „Roten Armee“ angefügt wurden.
Letzteres zeigt sowohl im Grundriss als auch auf einer spitzkegeligen Mittelsäule den Sowjetstern.
