The Loess Hills Scenic Byway, pronounced “Luss,” is a 220 mile route that parallels the north/south Interstate 29 in Western Iowa. One may choose as many of 13 loops and side trails to explore more of this picturesque landscape.

Murray Hill offers a short 200’ climb to a scenic view over the Missouri River valley which shows the contrast in the topography of this unique area. There is an informative sign that explains the land formation and what makes it special.

Following the Missouri River Valley, the wind-blown silt deposits claim to be 200’ deep in some areas. These deposits date back to the Illinoian and Wisconsinian glacial periods and are found only in western Iowa and in China, a state treasure to be sure. Previously designated as a state scenic byway, the Loess Hills area was chosen to be a National Scenic Byway in 2000 especially because of its scenery, history, landscape, and recreational characteristics. This area also parallels much of the Lewis and Clark expedition route. This unique land formation is about 15 miles wide and runs from Sioux City, IA to St. Joseph, Missouri. The Loess Hills Scenic Byway has been named one of the country's "10 most outstanding scenic byways."

Murray Hill is found on Co. Rd. F-20 west of Pisgah, IA.
