Located on US Highway 23 in Sully County, South Dakota, Onida has a population of 615 as of July 2009. This reflects a 17% decrease in population from the 2000 census.
The area was settled by German, Irish, English, Norwegian, French, and Swedish immigrants and the town was incorporated on March 3, 1883.
It is the county seat of Sully County.
Since the town is located fairly close to the Missouri River, many resorts and lodges are nearby. They provide rooms for sportsmen such as fishermen and hunters.
Onida is a very active small community with many local businesses thriving in the areas of agriculture and tourism. Three banks and numerous churches, Mennonite, Catholic, Lutheran, Methodist, and Presbyterian, are available for people to frequent.
