Rizal Park, still popularly known by its former name, Luneta, has been the scene of many significant moments in the history of the Philippines including the execution of Dr. Jose P. Rizal in 1896, whose death at the hands of the Spanish fanned the flames of revolution, and the inauguration of the Fifth Republic of the Philippines in 19 .
The focal point of the park is the monument to Jose Rizal, with its around the clock military honor guard. His final remains are also entombed there.
