Pie in the Sky is based around the activities of Detective Inspector Henry Crabbe. Henry was shot whilst a police officer and wants to take retirement so that he can indulge his passion for good food. Unfortunately his retirement is blocked by Assistant Chief Constable Fischer, largely on the basis that Fischer’s advancement requires Crabbe to stay solving crimes. A compromise is reached whereby Henry can open his restaurant, Pie in the Sky, providing he makes himself available to work for Fischer from time to time. The plot alternates between Henry building up his restaurant and solving crime for ACC Fischer.
Most of the locations for this series are in either Berkshire or Buckinghamshire. The exception to this is the restaurant itself, which was 64 High St, Hemel Hempstead.
