A tall stone cross of octagonal section on a two stage square
plinth. The whole rests on a three tier octagonal platform, approached from the
road by stone steps. On the West face of the plinth there is a carving of
George and the dragon.
There are names on the North, East and South faces and below
the main inscription on the West face. Names of the fallen from the First World
War are inscribed on the upper plinth, with names of the fallen from the Second
World War inscribed on the lower plinth.
The inscription reads
THEY WHOM THIS CROSS COMMEMORATES
WERE NUMBERED AMONG THOSE WHO AT
THE CALL OF KING AND COUNTRY, LEFT
ALL
THAT WAS DEAR TO THEM, ENDURED
HARDNESS,
FACED DANGER AND FINALLY PASSED OUT
OF THE SIGHT OF MEN BY THE PATH OF
DUTY AND SELF-SACRIFICE, GIVING UP
THEIR OWN LIVES THAT OTHERS MIGHT
LIVE IN FREEDOM.
The cross was dedicated in January 1919 by the
Bishop of St Albans. Unfortunately the cross blew down in 1948 and was
re-erected in 1950. A re-dedication by local clergy occurred in 1950.
