There has been a Queen’s Head on this site from at least 1763, as attested by the minutes of a parish meeting held there. Exactly who the Queen in question is, is debatable. A strong candidate, apart from the likeness of the image, would be Elizabeth I. Princess Elizabeth was shielded by the Thrale family in Nomansland, a mere mile or so away, when she was in hiding from Queen Mary. A grateful Elizabeth bestowed family arms on the Thrale family when she became Queen.
Sandridge had six public houses in the past:- the Green Man, Rose and Crown, Queen’s Head, Prince of Wales, White Horse, and the Woodman. Only the Green Man, Rose & Crown and the Queen’s Head survive today.
