The first historical (rather than legendary) figure in Gwynedd is Maelgwyn, who is associated with Degannwy, and who died in AD 549. He is mentioned by the contemporary writer Gildas, and also features in many of the Lives of the north Welsh saints. A reasonably complete list of kings and princes can be complied though some are little more than names mentioned in the 9th-century Annales Cambriae or on gravestones.
