Sioux City high school students earn the credit for this impressive mural to promote the arts to Siouxland community. Art, music and theater are woven into a colorful array of images, a display they can certainly be proud of. The glazed tile mural is located on the south side of the Terra Center at the corner of 3rd and Nebraska Streets.
The marker tells more of the story: Arts Alive, a project of the Sioux City Art Center, was created by over 300 volunteers between October 2002 and September 2003. The project was initiated by Cindy Waitt of the Waitt Family Foundation with the goal of having students create public art for the community. Sandi Fravel, Education Coordinator of the Sioux City Art Center, developed the project and hired artist/educator Sheryl Piere to coordinate the volunteers and instruct them on all processes involved in the creation of the glazed tile mural.
With much credit for the design going to student Michael Tschampl, the imagery of Arts Alive illustrates the strength of the arts in Siouxland and reveals the teamwork, pride and community spirit of those who contributed, time, talent, and financial support.
