Bien que l'identité exacte de l'homme connu sous le surnom d'Alexis le Trotteur soit sujette à débat, la plupart des historiens s'entendent pour dire qu'il s'agit en fait d'Alexis Lapointe, né en 1860 à Saint-Étienne-de-La-Malbaie ou Clermont, dans la région de Charlevoix, dans une famille de 14 enfants. Très tôt, il se distingue comme un original persuadé qu'il était en fait un étalon né sous une forme humaine. Enfant, il fabrique des chevaux de bois et s'amuse à les faire courir. Dès l'adolescence, il se fouette afin de stimuler ses muscles et entreprend de longs voyages dans sa région natale à l'instar de son animal fétiche. Sa famille accepte mal son excentricité : Alexis quitte le toit paternel à l'âge de 18 ans. Il passera le restant de sa vie sur la route. Sa principale activité professionnelle consistait à fabriquer des fours à pains.
Ses exploits physiques ont tellement été amplifiés qu'il devient difficile de séparer la réalité du mythe. Il a affronté à la course de nombreux chevaux, qu'il aurait toujours battus, dont le plus bel étalon du seigneur Duggan de La Malbaie. C'est pour cela qu'on le connait sous divers surnoms : « le Surcheval », « le Centaure », « le Cheval du Nord ».
L'anecdote la plus célèbre à son sujet veut qu'un jour, il se trouvait au quai de La Malbaie avec son père qui devait partir en bateau pour Bagotville, dont le départ était prévu à 11h. Comme son père refusait qu'il n'embarque avec lui, il lui aurait dit : « Quand vous arriverez à Bagotville, je prendrai les amarres du bateau. » Alexis se serait saisi d'un fouet chez lui afin de se stimuler et aurait entrepris le voyage au trot, soit un trajet de 146 kilomètres. À l'arrivée du bateau à Bagotville à 23h, soit 12 heures plus tard, Alexis était sur le quai attendant son père.

Though the precise identity of the man known as Alexis le Trotteur is the subject of some debate, most historians agree he was in fact Alexis Lapointe, born in 1860 at either Saint-Étienne-de-la-Malbaie or Clermont, in the Charlevoix region, to a family of 14 children. He established himself very early as an eccentric who was persuaded that he was in fact a stallion born in human form. As a child, he built wooden horses to play with. As a teenager, he would whip himself to stimulate his muscles and would undertake long trips throughout his native region, like his favourite animal. His family had trouble accepting his eccentricity; Alexis would leave home at the age of 18 and spend the rest of his life on the road.
His physical exploits have been so embellished over time that it has become difficult to separate the fact from the fiction. He is said to have raced against several horses, against whom he supposedly always won, including the prize stallion of Seigneur Duggan de La Malbaie. It earned him several nicknames, such as le Centaure (the Centaur), le Surcheval (the Superhorse) and le Cheval du Nord (the Horse of the North).
Probably the most famous anecdote concerning him tells that one day, he was on the quay of La Malbaie with his father who had to leave by boat to Bagotville at 11 o'clock. According to the legend, his father refused to take him along, so he told him, "When you arrive at Bagotville, I will be there to grab the moorings." Alexis then took a whip to stimulate himself and undertook to run the entire way to Bagotville, that is 146 kilometres. Twelve hours later, when the boat docked at Bagotville at 11 o'clock at night, Alexis was on the wharf waiting for his father.
