This unusally shaped round barn is was constructed around 1880 by Peter French. The building is 100 feet in diameter and it has a 60-foot diameter round stone corral in the middle. The outer paddock, used for working the horses, is 20 feet wide. The building features an umbrella-type center truss system, a 9 foot high stone corral wall.
Peter French came to the Donner and Blitzen Valley with a herd of 1200 head of cattle in 1872. Over the next 25 years he built up the 200,000 acre “P” Ranch and became one of Oregon’s first Cattle Kings. Of the three original round barns on the “P” Ranch this is the only one that remains. These barns provided a sheltered place to train and exersize horses during the winter.
