Howard DeLano
U.S. Grazing Service: 1939 - 1942
U.S. Bureau of Land Management: 1946 - 1972
Native Oregonian Howard DeLano embodies a life dedicated to service on public lands.Spanning five decades, Howard’s legacy with the Bureau of Land Management is seen in our bountiful rangelands, rich grazing, healthy wildlife, and natural resources preserved for generations to come. Out of Howard’s love for this region came his effort in the 1950s to propose and secure funds for the creation of the Steens Mountain National Back Country Byway - known as the “Loop Road” - which provides access up and around one of the most majestic lookouts in the Pacific Northwest. Both local residents and enthusiastic visitors from around the globe travel the “Loop Road” time and again to reach the nearly 10,000-foot peak of Steens Mountain and behold its breathtaking views. So the next time you’re gazing into the immense mountain gorges or exploring the high elevation open country, give a thanks to Howard.
